Wood carving covers a variety of styles or types of carving. So many in fact, I will undoubtably neglect to mention some. While many of these styles could be grouped under one heading, they have definate separation in the "real" carving world.
Whimsey carving - Mysterious and amazing carvings.
Figure carving - Carving the realistic human figure.
Whittling - Traditionally carving with a pocket knife.
Relief carving - High relief, Low relief and Pierced.
Chip carving - Precision, Patience and Practice.
Chainsaw carving - Today's chainsaw carver creates more than bears.
Bird carving - This includes all birds from Songbirds to Birds of Prey.
Fish carving - Realistic fish to decorative decoy fish.
Decoy carving - Life-like for display only or working decoys.
Caricature carving - My favorite style; capturing a personality in wood.
Santa carving - Including anything related to Santa.
Carousel carving - Not just horses, but swans, rabbits and more.
Spoon carving - Functional and Decorative.
Stick carving - Working canes and walking sticks or Display only.
Decorative carving - Decorating common items with light carving.
Architectural carving - Doors, Mantels, Corbels, ect.
Doll carving - From a stick with a face to life-like creations.
Incised carving - Shallow flowing cuts usually on flat surfaces.
