October 2007

Good Morning, Rick!

  Just a quick note......our club held its show and the kids' contest......you were right about not getting much response the first time out.  The only entrant was an 11 year old boy from Gurney, Wisconsin.  Even though we had notices out in the local newspaper and at all the schools.

  We awarded this young man the kit we purchased; and are saving the beginner's kit you donated along with the certificate for another try at this.  We will hold another contest after the first of the year for the 13-16 year old group.  In spite of the low response we all felt this was a really worthwhile effort.

Here is some background;
This little fella was being taught to carve by his grandfather, and was progressing nicely when Gramps passed away this last summer.  Needless to say; the boy was crushed.

For his contest entry, he carved an eight inch heart from pine with both his and his Grandpa's initials carved into it.  He was concerned that even if he won, he wouldn't get his carved heart back.  It took me a while to reassure him his entry would be returned.

When our club members heard the story, we pretty well decided this boy was getting the prize no matter WHO else entered!  I added a few blocks of basswood and instructions for that 5 minute owl, and a basswood walleye kit from Nancy Goff.

Joey lives near our club's secretary / treasurer; so perhaps we can arrange some mentoring.
I sure hope so.

Thanks again for the kit and for all your help!
